Text 7 Feb 10 notes Broke & Happy

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet, than a house full of feasting, with strife.

Proverbs 17:1

This verse basically says, “It is better to be broke and have peace than to be rich and have strife.” Many times we equate money with happiness. There seems to be so many things in this world that are controlled by money and if you don’t have money you often find yourself unhappy. But as Christians we have to learn not to allow money and material things to dictate our happiness. We should receive our joy from the Lord. Every day that we have down here on the Earth is a blessing. We often think that if we just had a little more money we would truly be happy and comfortable, but the thing that we have to realize is that money cannot change anything. If it could then rich people wouldn’t be in and out of rehab, getting divorces, committing suicide, and living generally hellacious lives.

We live in a society that is money hungry and obsessed with material things. We are all trying to get our “piece of the pie,” but in your getting remember what the scripture says. It is better to be broke and have peace than to be rich and have strife. I know a couple who are older and won the lottery for a little over a million dollars. They did not want their names published but it happened anyway. They were afraid that someone would try to break in their house now that they had a little money so they put a gate around the house and installed cameras and a security system. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with having those things, but is it really worth living in terror? Do you really want to live life stressing that someone is after you? Is it worth having to worry that people will only want to date you for your money? There is nothing wrong with having money, but do not put your happiness in money because it will fail you in the end. Money is fleeting. Once you spend it, its gone. If you hold on to it, it does you no good. If you invest it, you risk losing it. God wants his people to prosper, but not at the cost of your soul. Put your faith, trust, and love in the Lord and He will not fail you. He will not leave you and if you invest in Him, you are guaranteed a plentiful return.
